Gotta tell you people, ever since 2001, I've felt like I'm living in a dystopian novel with a bad plot line. Planes pranging into buildings, unnecessary wars, religious revivalism all over the place, a city of  a million people being flooded while the guy in charge plays guitar in California for a working week, John Fucking Howard is still Prime Minister, Hunter S. Thompson, Graham Kennedy, Margaret Scott and all of the Rat Pack except for Joey Bishop are dead. Petrol is at $1.30 a litre and commercial television had become about people on couches watching other people on couches.
But it's not all bad. Bush, the Emperor, has been discovered to be the bare-arsed simpleton that some of us alway knew he was. That dumb American meme that says to support the President because he's the President has got a good kick in the 'nads. The empowerment that people always said that the Internet would provide is coming to pass through blogging, which had become the only way to find out what's really going on on this clay and granite planet... and beyond. If people can blog during tsunamis and apocalyptic flooding, then dishonest and criminally negligent governments don't stand a chance. With the record for long-distance wi-fi sitting at 124.9 miles, and given the possibilities inherent in satellite internet connections, everyone who wants one can have a media presence. Not that you needed it for New Orleans. Even Fox News Channel got it right some of the time when people were dying of thirst and lack of medical aid on that freeway overpass. Something will come of all this. Whether it's good or bad, I dunno. But New Orleans is a tipping point, maybe more than 9-11 was. Let's see where it tips.
