I love my laptop. The portability, the screen, all the software, music and video I have on it, wifi (which I haven't used yet) and the travel stickers I have on the back of the screen. But for typing, it was getting to be an ergonomically awkward thing. The problem was that I had the keyboard flat to the desk and given that I've got a ganglion cyst that at the moment is lying semi-dormant in my right wrist, it made for some discomfort.

So being a 21st Century cyber-savvy guy, I googled the problem. Hee's what I found out. Laptops suck for ergonomic use. It's all about the angle of the screen and keyboard. There are a lot of people selling laptop stands. Velcro bases, neoprene wrist rests, brushed aluminium bases... but Xmas is coming up and I'd rather save my spondoolicks toward getting a DVD recorder after the holidays than spend it on a computer accessory. It was time to go low tech and kludge something together. McGyver time. So I looked around my admittedly cluttered desk and my eyes lit upon an omnibus edition of Michael Moorcock's Oswald Bastable stories. Perfect. Moving aside the cables at the back of the laptop, I propped up the rear end of it with the paperback, which is pretty thick. Works perfectly. Easier on the hands and eyes. At zero cost. Later I may replace it with something crafted together from scrap pine from the shed, but for now, I'm happy with the solution.

The BEST OF 2005 List - Part One

Best Movies:
Old Boy - Chan-wook Park's movie is unlike any I've ever seen. Originally based on a manga, it's one of those viewing experiences that horrified even as it thrilled me. It goes to places that no Hollywood or Australian film would venture. A drunk business man in Korea is kidnapped and imprisoned in a single room apartment for fifteen years. He doesn't know who his gaoler is and when he is finally released he's given a mobile phone, a wad of cash and five days to find out who kidnapped him. Min-sik Choi is awesomely good as Dae-su Oh, the prisoner. His insanity, unpredictability and unorthodox viewpoint ramp up this movie to dark and monstrous levels. When he locates his torturer, the fil escalate to an even higher level of drama, tragedy and weird redemption. This is an unique movie. It takes some guts to watch, but it's unforgettable.

You scored as Maximus. After his family was murdered by the evil emperor Commodus, the great Roman general Maximus went into hiding to avoid Commodus's assassins. He became a gladiator, hoping to dominate the colosseum in order to one day get the chance of killing Commodus. Maximus is valiant, courageous, and dedicated. He wants nothing more than the chance to avenge his family, but his temper often gets the better of him.
