Sal and I got our very first new car last week. A Toyota Corolla Ascent, which is classed as a small sedan, which means some level of shrinkage on our carbon footprint, not to mention petrol bill. The colour is called "merlot", a rich wine red hue that definitely pops. It also comes with that all important whip accessory: an mp3 playing CD deck. It's a lovely ride and both of us are happy with it. It doesn't have the donk that the old Falcon did, but there is a cool overdrive function to get us up mountains.
I've been getting a lot of questions on why we didn't go for a GPS system as well. The answer is simple and pretty prosaic. Don't need one. I can read a map. A couple of years ago, we were dropped a kilometre away from our destination by an Emirati cab driver who spoke about as much English as I do Arabic and just with the memory of a map, I unerringly navigated us through the back alleys of a souk thousands of years old to within half a block of our destination -- the abra wharf on the Khor Dubai. With eerily neolithic and almost extrasensory skills like that, I don't need some little screen on the dashboard like the one Sean Connery used to track Goldfinger through Switzerland.
We also had a great night last night. Dinner at Bar Bosh in Knox with Mr Phil and Ms Frances. It's great to catch up with old and good friends over a pide shaped like a fat canoe and a cup of coffee. We all promised to do it more often. Sal and I venture into the Eastern Suburbs moderately often to visit her parents, so it isn't a strain to drive an extra kilometre and link up with P&F.
Other news: we found a great celebrant for our September nuptials, and we're doing some work on the house, a new extended back verandah/pergola and a car port. Lots of quotes and fuss involved in the latter, but allowing for council permits, we should have the work done by the end of April.
