[livejournal.com profile] queen_nephthys and I headed off to sunny Daylesford today for the hell of it. In Ballan we found a piss poor street market where people were selling succulents in little punnets, rusty old hand tools, public domain DVDs in shoddy covers (there must be a billion different versions of Charade in the World) and in general the kind of detritus that Op Shops would throw into a dumpster. I did see a pine tree in a park that was grown from a seed from the famous Lone Pine at Gallipoli. It was maybe six metres tall and pine cones hung from it's skeletal branches. It didn't look well, but the weird genetic connection to a piece of history made me smile.

Daylesford as usual was fun. At the bookshop by the lake I picked up a copy of Pauline Kael's 5001 Nights In The Cinema and a book on Hawaiian legends by His Hawaiian Majesty King David Kalakaua. Later, I picked up two copies of Man Junior magazine (I collect 'em) - in this case the April 1956 one and the August 1963. Both in excellent nick and both have R.Carson Gold's Devil Doone cartoons in them. The blokey adventure stories are fun too, with titles like " Three For Boot Hill", "I Lived Through Chinese Torture" and "One Woman Town".

After a quick pub lunch followed by coffee and rhubarb and apple crumble at the Rhubarb Cafe, we drove home. Watched "American Dreamz" and "Zathura" on DVD. The first was so-so, the second a good kiddie SF movie directed by Jon Favreau whose next flick is Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr.
