As a good, ethical atheist, I can't buy the superstitions around this time of year, but I do like the idea of a week for people to get together with those they like and love, eat too much food, get the veritas out of the vino and in general act as cool as they should the rest of the year anyway. Yesterday was a good example of that. After doing the Zombie Town thing at Highpoint at 1.20 to 3.30 am on Saturday morning with [livejournal.com profile] queen_nephthys and Alicia The Bridesmaid where I did chuck a grump after two hours of wandering around among the Walking Dead. Nonetheless, we got home safely, crashed out and woke mid-morning.

On the way to take Alicia home, we stopped at the cool Italian supermarket on Sydney Road, Brunswick for supplies. Supplies in this case means a kilo of pecorino cheese, a couple of different bottles of sicilian amaretto (white and dark), jars of pasta sauce, fresh pasta, a deck of Italian playing cards for my pasteboard collection and a six pack of chinotto. While there we bumped into Andi, a lovely woman I used to work with. She now has two kids and looked radiantly happy. On the way back to the car, we met Julian W at the Strathfield Radio shop. He offered us a megatonne of apricots. The trees in his and Lucy's back yard have apparently beaten the drought and produced a bumper crop this year.

We dropped off Alicia and motored home where Jamie and Sarah dropped in briefly en route to the Reuel family manse in Warnnambool, carrying gifties and good cheer. (First time I ever got a stress ball in the shape of a realistic tit - packaged in a very chic little box.) Hopefully they can drop in longer on the way back for coffee.

[livejournal.com profile] queen_nephthys and I, being impatient, exchanged our gifts, too. She got a DVD, a CD and a vibrating chair liner into which you can hook your mp3 player. I got a 2 gig mp3 player, a talking Quagmire pen, a little music box mechanism that plays Charles Trenet's La Mer and more stuff to come from Amazon.com. I also got word that the family's gifts have arrived, so all is well.

Today, we're being sluggish, apart from my sojourn to the gym. Tonight, we eat pasta with rustic olives and pecorino with peppercorns in it. mmmmmmm
