Well
queen_nephthys and I are back in Melbourne after a marathon road trip of 4334 kilometres. Up to Brisvegas via Dubbo and back to Melbum straight down the east coast.
It's a bit of a let down to go from t-shirt weather, sunglasses, banana plantations, sugar cane fields and strolling through the Sunday craft market along the southern side of the Brisbane River to shit-better-put-a-windcheater-on, AFL cultism and oh yeah, and the two top guys of the state government just quit. There's a strong part of me that wants to be back riding the BatWing SpaceShot, eating breakfast at Fat Boys with
drjon, sipping chai latte while strolling the streets of Byron Bay, eating frozen chocolate-coated bananas while looking at a view of Coffs Harbour or, as we did yesterday, prowling secondhand bookshops everywhere between the Queensland border and Bateman's Bay, eating the best fish and chips in the World at the Fisherman's Co-op in Bermagui. But it's good to hang here with Jack the Cat, sleep in our own bed and not have to pack and drive long distances every morning. The holiday has been excellent, even the couple of hours we spent in The Land That Taste Forgot - Surfer's Paradise.
(BTW, if you're ever driving through Eden in NSW, buy the "Eves of Eden" 2008 calendar. It's one of those "Calendar Girls" things where the woman of the town strip off decoriously for charity, in this case breast cancer research. I got mine at the Eden Fishermen's Recreation Club, and had a chat with Ms April about it as well. (She works at the club and is the one carrying two strategically located but nipple-chilling jugs of beer.)
