I spent last night wired up to twelve electronic sensors being monitored from another room.
Having never been overnight in a hospital before, except that one time when I got evicted from a very comfortable home and had my umbilicus severed, I can now safely say that hospitals suck. The sleep test was necessary but it ain't a night at the Burj Al Arab. Especially if you're pretty much tied to a bed by electrodes for ten hours - oops forgot the one attached to my moustache to monitor breathing and the blood oxygen monitor on my fingers - fourteen sensors. Two of the things were stuck to my skull with blobs of wax, too. Sleep was complicated by the fact that I was at risk of strangulation every time I rolled over and that every time a sensor went astray, the monitoring guy came in to reattach it. All up I got about three and a half hours kip and at 5.30 am the guy came back in to unwire me. But I did get a lot of Charlie Stross' The Hidden Family read and went through a few hours of accumulated podcasts on my i-pod.
Sal picked me up at 7 am which was like breaking out of Colditz and we headed up to the Red Star Cafe near South Melbourne market, which I recommend. A couple of ristretto shots and a breakfast of muffins, poached eggs, smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce restored my sanguinity. I caught up on some sleep when we got home and found an English translation for Plastic Bertrand's Ca Plan Pour Moi.
