Well Sal and I are sitting in hot, humid Adelaide, hovering around the a/c in our room like cavepeople around a campfire. We drove over yesterday, starting out at 1 am because we couldn't sleep and thought "What the fuck, let's go!" So we drove into the moonlit night wary of wildlife crossing the road but only ever seeing one rabbit which darted across the four lanes way ahead of me. By morning, fatigued but wired and still a few hours away from being able to book in to the lodgings, we took the ferry across the Murray at Tailem Bend, then drove down to Wellington and Milang on the somewhat diminished shores of Lake Alexandrina, then stopped for coffee at Strathalbyn and drove down the Fleurieu Peninsula to Victor Harbour which has a dunny which boasts (with signage) of being the oldest existing public toilet in Victor Harbour. I picked up a copy of Phillip Pullman's The Subtle Knife and we walked around the township for a time.

Eventually we booked in to the lodgings and crashed for a few hours before wandering forth again to find some extremely good fre-range charcoal chicken and delicious salads at Urban Chicken in Mitcham.

Today started with a trip to Hahndorf which is kinda like the rest of Australian would've been if Germany had won the War and then turned nice. Lots of folky Deutsch stuff, flags and smoked sausages and great beers and a forty two degree temperature. Just so you know, never drink a pint of dark German beer on an empty stomach before lunch, it can knock the shit out of you. We bought lots of gourmet nibbles. Kangaroo salami, beer sticks, some great marinated goats cheese from a place called "Udder Delights", stuffed olives and other commestibles including a bunch of stuff from the sweet shop in town. From there we sashayed through various hill towns and careered down the Thunder Road that is the highway down into Adelaide before fetching up against the Gulf of St Vincent in Glenelg which has in the last decade or so transmogrified into a generic pubs, bars, cafes and souvenir shop kind of place not entirely dissimilar to Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise or The Corso in Manly. Picked up a couple of Dennis Wheatley paperbacks in a side-street book exchange and then lit out for a long drive north, then west then south to get back to the digs. Dinner tonight was at the German Arms Hotel in Hahndorf (only 20 mins from Mitcham where we're staying) where I had a terrific Chicken Krakaw and Sal managed a Sauerbrauten. Tomorrow we're into the city and maybe the Zoo depending on the Celsius.
