Ten years ago, in Minneapolis, I walked down the road from where I was staying, carrying my cup of morning coffee and helped form a human-shield in front of a gay-friendly church that was about to be picketed by Fred Phelps' minions. Yeah, I'm an atheist, but I try to encourage those who are inclusive rather than exclusive. I saw the GOD HATES FAGS, and AIDS CURES FAGS placards, enjoyed the community tv reporter who showed up to film the protest (a drag queen) and remember fondly the moment when Dykes On Bikes zoomed around the corner on their harleys, engines revving madly. They scared the shit out of Phelps' people, all eight or ten of them. How many people defended the church? Hundreds.
