Had a good day yesterday. Sal was crook, but wanted me to get out to see Iron Man with Jamie, Sarah and Sarah's cousin whose name eludes me right now. Getting across to Knox is a 60 kms drive for me, but no sweat, I like long drives. I tuned the car radio in to 3CR, grokking the really retro wonderfulness of
Vilja O Vilja from Franz Lehar's
The Merry Widow and weird German ditties from operettas like
Viktoria And Her Hussars which took me to a whole different planet of music while I navigated the 'burbs.
I did notice a demographic shift as I travelled east, based on bus shelter advertising. In the less gilded suburbs, the bus shelter ads were for Iron Man. Kewl. As I headed into the land of black Mercedes people movers and obscenely large Private Schools, the ads changed to...
Andre Rieu concert tours! I had a mental image of entire suburbs holding hands cross-armed and rocking back and forth to Strauss waltzes while a demented
Limbourgeois band leader conducted a hundred-piece orchestra up on a stage.
Got to Knox and treated myself to a rosehip
Bubble Tea while waiting for the usual suspects. If you get bubble tea, you have to get those gelatinous pearls in them. There's no point to it if you don't.
After the movie it was back to Jamie and Sarah's for a barbecue dinner, where Sarah told me that Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark reminded her of me. What do you say to that? It's a compliment. The last time someone compared me to a movie star was when Bruce Willis was in Moonlighting.
We gossed about everything from Austrian cellar-children to how families piss us off, chased an errant possum around the downstairs area after it sauntered through the cat-door and decided that it wanted to watch Marlon Brando in
"The Chase" with us. Or maybe it just wanted to drink Tokay, sip espresso and eat Jamie's banana cake. Who knows what goes through the mind of a possum so stupid that it tries to run through a closed door at high speed. Perhaps it thought it was in a Warner Brothers Cartoon.
Cool night, good company and on the way home I listened to late night ABC jazz.
