Last night I wandered into the CBD, perched myself on a stool at the espresso bar in David Jones' food hall and made some notes for the next podcast while sipping a very good ristretto shot. Popped down the road to pick up [livejournal.com profile] ladnews latest - Earth Ascendant and met [livejournal.com profile] rosiemitchell at the GPO. We walked up to The Lounge where she indulged her SITC fetish by ordering a cosmopolitan while I quaffed aqua minerale.

We caught up on all the gossip while a light rain fell around us in the outdoor tables. From there we bopped down to a chinese hotpot bar for dinner, which, she told me, cost slightly less than the cosmopolitan and mineral water. I had a great pork with spring onions and ginger served on a bed of hokkien noodles on a sizzling platter. Just the thing for a soggy Melbourne evening.

(Sal was off on a team leader junket for work, drinking mai-tais before doing a tour of old Melbourne gaol and finishing up with dinner at the Punch Bowl in Little Bourke Street.)

[livejournal.com profile] rosiemitchell and I found a perch at the bar of Caffe e Cucina on Little Collins Street where I indulged in another espresso shot and she had a glass of merlot. Nice little place. Very upmarket but nice enough to let a guy wearing a skull and crossbones t-shirt sit at the bar.

The whole idea of the evening was to help Jamie and Sarah use the freebie tickets they had for the Comedy Club at the Athaneum, so we sashayed over there to meet J&S who hadn't had time to eat and so scoffed down some Twisties and chardonnay at the bar. Up three flights of stairs to the Comedy Club which was laid out kinda like a bingo hall, except for the bar along one side. We found perches on the seats at the far corner of the auditorium and watched Matt Elsbury, Michael Connelly and the MC, Adam Rozenbachs so their sets. Not the top of the range comedians but good solid performers learning their craft and doing well at it. During the breaks we managed to catch up with J&S, and apart from an incident where Sarah spat a large chunk of cashew onto my glasses while talking with me, nothing much happened. Jamie and I did the usual DVD exchange, which is our equivalent of a hug, and after the gig, we all parted.

I strolled up Collins Street, passing drunken women not dressed for the weather, tuxedoed rich bastards pouring out of The Melbourne Club and noisy 20 year old dickheads shouting at each other from sixty centimetre distances and it suddenly occurred to me that I was probably the only sober person (apart from bar-staff and hospital patients) within two or three kilometres. It was a weird sensation, but gave me the confidence to think I could take anyone in the CBD if they got aggressive at me one-on-one... maybe up to three-on-one if they were emo-boys.

Got a txt from Sal and met her at Punch Bowl, drove home and crashed.
