Okay, so what's the pop cultural world going to look like in five years when mainstream TV is dead media, newspapers have given up dead tree editions and most of the people you and I know are going to be grabbing their tv shows, news and movies off the Web? (Yeah, it's already happening for some of us.) Media is going to be even more global. People will be grabbing obscure television shows from non-English speaking countries with fan-written subtitles, Australian TV series will go viral worldwide if they're any good, news aggregators will change the way we see current events, nobody's viewing will be the same as anyone else's. Only the very old or cash strapped will be watching or experiencing old-school TV.

Here's my prediction: there will be some really kick-arse web based services which will let you input your preferences then advise you on what the good stuff for you is. There may even be some way of automating the service so that when you get your recommendations, it will open a bittorrent client and start downloading x-number of hours of tailored programming for you. If it isn't quite what you like, you can tweak the settings for next time. When you want more, just go back to the site, log in and get more. This stuff may already exist, but if it doesn't, it will and will go viral with early adopters. It will fly right under the copyright wars and probably have a built-in anonymiser.

Any opinions on this scenario?

  • 20:02 Watching Robert Aldrich's Kiss Me Deadly tinyurl.com/29k2y6 for Paleocinema Podcast. Film noir beats Abba musicals every time. #
  • 10:44 Wow days left & I have all but completed podcast research. Feeling very smug. #
