Never Play Bridge Against These People

The Australian media is fucking nuts. I just caught this one here and had a moment of despair for all the progress humanity has had toward rationalism.

This Guy Is A Cab Driver

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvUuHfT-VaY

BBC stuff up and interview a cab driver instead of an internet pundit. The poor guy does a great job, though.

This Island Earth and Imitation of Life -- 1950s SF and Soap Opera Set In The Same Universe?

Errol Morris, the documentary film maker has found a creepy crossover between 50s SF classic This Island Earth and Douglas Sirk's 50's soapie movie, Imitation of Life. (Thanks to Gary Farber's blog Amygdala for the heads up on this one.

Of course, this isn't Douglas Sirk's only genre crossover. In the Kim Newman/Jack Yeovil novels set in the Warhammer universe, there's a theatrical director/playwright/actor called Detlef Sierck, which just happens to be the original name of Douglas Sirk. There' also a László Löwenstein in them, too. Newman has written extensively, and wittily about movies and probably writes more in-jokes into his fiction than any three other authors.
