1. What is one movie you wish everyone would see?

Tough one. Probably The Young Girls of Rochefort which has a vivacity that always cheers me up - and I already inflicted it on a semi-willing audience at Jamie Reuel and Sarah Endacott's place or maybe Viaggio In Italia which is George Sanders' best movie. But that may change. I'm not constant when it comes to my passion for cinema. Next week it could be Hans Conreid dressing in The 5000 Fingers of Dr T.

2. What is your favourite memory from time spent with Sally?

Probably when we had walked around Paris for nine hours and she stopped me on the banks of the Seine and confessed that she had enormous blisters on her feet and couldn't walk any more. She'd been suffering in silence for hours because I was grooving so much on being in Paris that she didn't want to spoil my joy. That's love for you. With no French I managed somehow to buy bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic and scissors in a pharmacy, get her back to the hotel and do first aid on her poor aching plates.

3. Name a film that you would actually like to see remade - why, and if you want, by whom?

Doc Savage, Man of Bronze. Maybe done by Peter Jackson. A good pulp era adventure flick would go down well. The George Pal version was a lost opportunity. It might well play out like a 1930s dieselpunk Ocean's 11.

4. Over your life you haven't exactly avoided controversy or been afriad to rub folks the wrong way. What is something you have done that you later regretted?

Lots of things. I've been unkind at times to people ill-equipped to handle it. I don't mind punching at pretension but I like being David versus Goliath, Zorro or Scaramouche rather than a bully. At times, my situational depression clouds my judgement and I do that. I regret those incidents more than most people would know and these days I do apologise if I'm wrong. But I don't regret rubbing cruel people the wrong way or people who seriously self-promote for science fiction awards (especially when they do it with all the class and subtlety of street-corner hookers in a Jack the Ripper film) and I will occasionally have a go at people who think that fandom owes them its attention and disposable income just because they're who they are.

5. Are there Slim Pickins?

About as often as Buck Rogers and Googie Withers
